Although this is not an ideal situation, it's not even the worst part. The whole system is unsustainable because of the need to use too much energy to produce food. About 90% of the food that's produced is either wasted or used in an inefficient way. Furthermore, according to a study carried out by the United Nations, 70% of the world's population lives in urban areas, and cities alone will account for more than 50% of the global population in 2030. So why don't we just continue to depend on agriculture in the countryside, where it is less likely to suffer from natural disasters, and where we have access to land? For centuries, people have been going to farms to get food. And we still do, despite all the technological advances that have been made. But what if the way we grow our food was changed? What if we started growing it in a different manner, in a city? It's not just about being "green" or "environmentally-friendly". It's about finding a way to feed the world in a more efficient way. It's about making sure that we don't have to depend on one part of the world in order to feed ourselves. In this article, we will talk about how a new type of agriculture is emerging, and what it means for the future of food production. What is Urban Agriculture? Urban agriculture is the practice of growing food in cities. The main difference urban agriculture has from the traditional method is that the setting where you are growing food in places where there are no fields, limited arable land or in highly-populated area. So far, urban agriculture is an idea that is gaining momentum in a few developing and well-developed countries, such as the United States, due to the rude awakening that is brought by the COVID pandemic lockdowns. But with the rapid development of technology, more and more people are now starting to experiment with growing food in their cities. It can be practiced in many different ways. Urban agriculture takes advantage of all the spaces that you would normally not use for anything else. For example, you can grow food on rooftops. You can also grow food in abandoned lots, parks, playgrounds, empty lots, and other areas where you normally wouldn't grow food. Another way to grow food in an urban area is to start small, and then expand from there. You could start by growing a small garden in your backyard, and eventually expand to larger gardens. In the countryside, crops are most likely to be damaged by floods, hurricanes, and other kinds of natural disasters. But in cities, you will have a higher chance of surviving such disasters. Future of Food Production In a world where the human population is growing exponentially, the ability to grow food locally becomes more and more important for the health of our planet. The future of food production is urban farming because urban farmers use less land, produce more food, and don't need to use as much energy. The same is true for sustainability; waste energy and residential byproducts can be put to good use in urban farming, which means that it's a sustainable form of food production.
